HOWARD, Alfred E., P.E. Of Dorchester, Arlington, and Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2023, with his wife Jane (Algmin) Howard at his side.
Alf was born April 5, 1934 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and spent his early years happily in Digby with his brother John and sister Maryellen. He attended Tower Road School and Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 1954 with a BSc. and later attended the pioneering Bureau of Highway Traffic at Yale. This launched his long and productive career in traffic engineering for the public and private sectors, culminating in his role as Chief Engineer for Howard Stein Hudson Engineers and Planners, where he worked with his wife Jane. For many projects over the years, he served as a technical expert, mentor and friend to engineers, planners, colleagues and clients, offering his “words of wisdom” like “perspective before precision”, which live on today.
After retiring in 2002, he spent happy days with family, friends and dog Moka both in the Boston area and Grand Pre, Nova Scotia. Alf was proud to be the head of a unique and wonderful family. With his first wife Bea, he nurtured five children, Louise Healey, Stephanie Leggeri, and Margot, Michael and Matthew Howard. With Jane he was dad to Dorothy Tully and Ross Howard. He is survived by Bea and Jane plus all the children; spouses Bob Healey, Audrey DeMasi Howard and Arvonn Tully; grandchildren Dominic and Anthony Leggeri, Samantha Santiago, Thomas and Sydney DeMasi, Olivia Hohler, and Eleanor and Claire Tully; and great-grandchildren Rachel and Dominic Leggeri; plus nieces, nephews and cousins across Canada and the United States.
