Of Northampton, a longtime Dorchester resident, died suddenly June 5, 2023 at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Northampton surrounded by family. She was 82.
Born in Dorchester, Mrs. Mahoney raised her family there, where she lived until moving in with her daughter in Cambridge and later Northampton.
A graduate of Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester, she had worked for many years in cafeterias, most notably at The Boston Globe, where as a cashier she was known to serve up local wit, (while sometimes reading the Boston Herald behind her register.) As a homemaker when her two children were young, Mrs. Mahoney was also a beloved babysitter to other children in the neighborhood. She began her career working at John Hancock.
An avid Red Sox fan who almost never missed a game, she fell in love with baseball through her late husband Charlie, who was a longtime Savin Hill sports coach. Both were fixtures together at McConnell Park in the 1980s and -90s, where they had been known to enthusiastically cheer on all kids there, especially the underdogs. Mrs. Mahoney was cherished for the familial warmth she extended to her children’s friends, who, with her children, often tested her patience, and who fondly recall her tolerant nature and easygoing humor. She maintained many long-lasting friendships, some dating back to childhood, and enjoyed spending time talking with friends on the phone up until very recently. A devoted wife, mother, sister, and aunt, she centered her world around her grandchildren in her retirement.
Wife of the late Charles E., Mrs. Mahoney is survived by a son, Charles and his wife Kristen of Cranston, R.I; a daughter Kellyanne and her husband Matthew Hoey of Northampton; two grandchildren Annamarie Hoey of Northampton and Joseph of Griswold, Conn.; several nieces, including Patricia Morrison of Bridgewater; and several grand- nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Ruth Bass; a brother Phillip Bass; and a sister Edith Abbondanza.
Family and friends will honor and remember Alice’s memory by gathering for visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER, on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Margaret Church of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, on Thursday morning, June 8th, at 9:00 A.M.
Burial will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale.
