Catherine "Kay" (McDonagh) Byrne

Catherine died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on August 24, 2023 at the age of 83 years.

Born on February 23, 1940, to the late Coleman McDonagh and Ann (Conneely) McDonagh, in Rath Cairn, County Meath, Ireland. She met her late husband Nicholas “Nick” Byrne in England, where they married in 1963. They emigrated to Boston in 1964, settled in Dorchester, and together they owned and operated the Lower Mills Pub for many years. Over the years, Catherine especially enjoyed her trips back to Ireland to visit her family.

Loving mother of Lorrainne and her husband Edward Connolly of Manchester, NH, Brian Byrne of Wareham, Nicholas and his wife Melissa Byrne of Marlboro, Kathleen and her husband John Bruce of Hanover, Maureen Byrne and her friend Robert Sterling of New London, NH, Philip and his wife Nicole Byrne of Weymouth, and Derek and his wife Kelly Byrne of Braintree.

Cherished “Nana“ of Meredith and her husband Adam Burks, Aidan Connolly, Rowan Connolly, Kayla and her husband Brandon Quaranto, Ryan Maloney, Allison Bruce, Rory Byrne, Ronan Barrett, Nicholas Byrne, John Byrne, George Byrne, Harry Byrne, and Jane Byrne.

Great-grandmother of James, Jack, Paige, Jameson, and Sierra.

Sister of Brid and her husband Mick Kerrane, Padraic and his wife Mairead McDonagh, Mairtin McDonagh, Sean McDonagh, Annie and her husband Tom O’Sullivan, Tony McDonagh, and the late Maureen and her husband John Boles, Coleen McDonagh, and Micky McDonagh.

Catherine is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends will honor and remember Catherine’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER, on Monday, August 28, 2023 from 4:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mark Church on Tuesday morning, August 29^th, at 10:00 A.M. by her dear friend Rev. Dan Finn.

Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Catherine’s memory may be made to The Irish Pastoral Centre, 540 Gallivan Boulevard, Dorchester, MA 02124.
