Beloved father of Brigid and her husband McCarthy "Mac" Mayer of Kansas, and Shane Houton of Burlington, Vermont.
Devoted grandfather of Eben, Noa, and Helen.
Son of the late Daniel and Mary (Toland) Houton.
Loving brother of John F. Houton and his wife Dr. Ellen Kanter of Buzzards Bay, Daniel J. Houton of Dorchester, Thomas J. and his wife Donna Houton of Beverly, Anna and her husband Val McGann of Kennebunk, Maine, Catherine and her husband Dr. Joseph Benedict of Mystic, Connecticut, Rosaleen and her husband George Pyne of Milford, and the late Patricia A. Houton.
Longtime friend of Mary Wright of Burlington, Vermont.
Survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Interment private.
Charlie was a valued lecturer in the English Department at the University of Vermont for nearly 15 years.
He completed his B.A. in English at UVM in 1994 and then pursued his M.A. in English, winning the Department's highest honor for graduate students, the Tupper Award in 1996. He then earned a second M.A. in Greek and Latin in 2002.
Charlie will be remembered by his students, friends, and loved ones as a lifelong learner, lover of reading, and a poet.
His kindness, generosity, and sense of humor will be missed by those fortunate enough to have spent time with him.
