Of Quincy, formerly of Dorchester and South Boston, died peacefully at her daughter’s home after a long illness on May 26, 2025, at the age of 74 years.
Deeply loyal to her friends and family, full of grit and grace, and always eager to laugh or take a trip to the dance floor. In her own words, Ellen Morrell lived a “very rich life.”
With many careers under her belt, she retired from Massport. She cherished time with her family and never missed an opportunity to spend time with her beloved grandchildren. Whether it was a birthday party, a trip to Dunkin, spontaneous parasailing in Key West, or water slides in New Hampshire, Ellen was vivacious, always present, and her grandchildren’s number one cheerleader.
A devoted sports enthusiast, she was a proud and passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox.
Beloved wife of the late John F. Morrell, daughter of the late Michael and Helen O’Donnell, and loving niece of John “Dud” O’Donnell.
Ellen’s spirit will remain with us through her daughter, Michele, and her husband, Jack Hart of South Boston/Braintree, and Sandra Morrell of Quincy.
Cherished “Nana” of Kathleen, Maggie, Emily, and MaryKate Hart, Casey and Morgan Perry, Dylan Rudolph, Austin Simone, Stephen, Mariah, and Jaylene Presente.
Sister of Kathleen O’Donnell and her partner Charlie Wilkins of Weymouth, Michael O’Donnell of Weymouth, Mary O’Donnell of Stoughton, and Judith O’Donnell of Maine.
Survived by many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ellen’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER, on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Gate of Heaven Church, 615 East Fourth Street, South Boston, on Friday, May 30th at 12:00 noon. A private interment will be held with her late husband at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to the Mary Ann Brett Food Pantry, 800 Columbia Rd., Dorchester, MA 02125, or to the Gavin Foundation at www.gavinfoundation.org.
