Gertrude M. (McCarthy) Lynch
Of Dorchester, died peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 94.
Gertie was born in Cambridge, MA and raised in Inman Square, where she made lifelong friendships. Her beloved husband, the late William J. Lynch, was also from Cambridge — though the two of them met by chance at the beach.
Together they built their life in Dorchester, where Gertie dedicated herself to raising their children in Savin Hill. She became an integral part of that community, offering a kind smile to all she met and opening her door to countless neighbors and friends over the years, always for a cup of tea.
Loving mother of Jeanne Watts and her late husband Robert Watts of Quincy, William and his wife Ann Marie Lynch of Braintree, Michael Lynch and his partner Gordon Ernst of Rhode Island, Kathleen Lucas and her late husband Thomas Lucas of Dorchester, Stephen and his wife Yuko Lynch of Maine, Susan and her husband Gary Philcox of Florida, John and his wife Regina Lynch of Weymouth, Anne and her husband Francis Grant of Holbrook, Capt. Patrick Lynch BFD and his wife Joanne Lynch of Foxboro, Janet Lynch of Dorchester, Joseph Lynch BPD of Quincy, and the late Paul Lynch and Ellen Lynch.
Sister of Betty Reardon, Joseph McCarthy, and the late Charles McCarthy, Arthur McCarthy, Francis “Skippy” McCarthy, and Mary Ring.
Gertie loved the water and could spend countless hours swimming and enjoying the beach. She lived for a time in Squantum and in West Palm Beach, Florida, but she made her way back to Dorchester to be closer to her beloved grandchildren. She never missed a First Communion, graduation, or birthday party.
She was the cherished Nana to her 24 grandchildren: Ellen, Kenny, Tommy, Bobby, Matt, Billy, Ryan G., Timmy, Kacey, Patrick, Ryan L., Travis, Brendan, Rae, Ashby, Danny, Cheyenne, Jill, Devon, Brooke, Lauren, Reilly, Aidan, and Gertie. She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren — 9 great-granddaughters and 11 great-grandsons — and loving “Birdie” to her one great-great-granddaughter.
Gertie spent her final years on the third floor of the Bostonian in Dorchester, where she received exceptional care from the nursing and aide staff.
Family and friends will honor and remember Gertrude’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., Dorchester, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Margaret Church of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 800 Columbia Road, Dorchester, on Thursday morning, August 6, 2026, at 10:00 A.M.
Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.
