SWEENEY, Jeremiah. Of Dorchester, passed on December 17, 2021 at the age of 81 years with his family at his side.
Born in Boston on May 22, 1940 to John and Mary (Coughlan) Sweeney, who immigrated from County Cork and worked hard to build a life for their family.
He was the older brother to John Sweeney, Denis Sweeney (who was waiting for Jerry at the Pearly Gates), and Maureen (Leydon). Jerry attended St. Margaret's Grammar School and Boston Technical High School and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Margaret's and St. William's Parishes in Dorchester. After serving honorably in the United States Army, Jerry proudly protected his community as an Officer in the Boston Police Department for 39 years where he is fondly remembered as a loyal and faithful public servant. After retiring from the BPD, Jerry enjoyed hitting golf balls in the gully across from his Davitt Street home in Dorchester's Savin Hill neighborhood, walking Castle Island, and keeping a close eye on things outside the Sugar Bowl Ice Cream Shop on Dot Ave.
Survived by his beloved wife of 33 years Linda (Flanagan) Sweeney, their devoted daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sweeney-Fanelli, his caring son-in-law Timothy Sweeney-Fanelli and their daughter Laura, of New Hampshire.
Jerry was a cherished brother in-law to Kathleen Sweeney, Patricia Sweeney, Bill Leydon, Elizabeth Keizer, Patricia Nestor and to Margaret, John, Christine and Susan Flanagan. He was also a warm and supportive uncle and great uncle to two generations of his large and close-knit Irish family.
As a "Friend of Bill," Jerry earned the respect of and lent support to many. Everyone who was lucky enough to know Jeremiah can share at least a few classic Jerryisms that reflect an honest and honorable man of quiet strength and endearing quirks. Jerry loved and was loved deeply, and he will be in our hearts forever.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jerry's life by gathering for visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Avenue, DORCHESTER, on Tuesday, December 28th, from 4-7 P.M.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Margaret Church of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish on Wednesday morning, December 29, 2021 at 10 A.M.
Burial with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 12:30 P.M.
