Of Boston, originally of Andover, and formerly of Haverhill and West Roxbury, passed away July 18, 2023, at the age of 86. Beloved daughter of the late Joseph Tangney and Gladys Daly Tangney. Loving mother of Michael Harol and his wife Christine Pham, Corrinne Harol, Kim Harol, and Kristen Harol and her partner Chad Montrie. Cherished sister of Mildred Tangney, and Michael and his wife Mary Tangney, aunt of Kevin Tangney and Brenda Tangney Gambacinni, and grandmother of Lily Maivy Vo. She is also survived by extended members of the Tangney, Harol and, Pham families and by dozens of colleagues and friends.
Marcia had a long and adventurous career in math education, beginning at IBM and including 27 years in the Andover Public school system. Many generations of students remember her boundless energy and her motto “Dare to be Wrong,” In retirement she continued her vocation by training new teachers at Simmons College and by volunteering to teach math to MIT employees studying for their high school degrees. Marcia graduated from Punchard High Class of 1955 (as valedictorian) Manhattanville College Class of 1959 and completed a Master’s in Education at Radcliffe/Harvard Graduate School of Education (1960). Besides these academic and professional achievements, Marcia was a joyful gardener, a world-class people-watcher, and a devotee of the beach, which she described as “the place the worry list goes to die.” But her greatest accomplishments were her personal relationships: always ready to help a friend or a stranger, Marcia was a fantastic listener and an eager companion in whatever life offered.
Marcia had a great love of life. Her motto regarding travel was “you need money, friends and time, and if you have two out of three, then go!” Regarding money, her advice was “it’s just paper,” and “ it’s not a problem if it can be solved with money.” Although she never had an abundance of money, she was lucky enough to have family living abroad, and she had a great gift for friendship. Hence, Marcia enthusiastically toured a great deal of the world. Even when her sightseeing involved local hospitals, she made the best of every situation; for example, she liked to brag about her “french hip.” Marcia’s philosophy of life, which her followers call “Marciology,” can be summed up by her adage “always throw your hat in the ring!” She lived by that advice and never ceased, even as her illness developed, to make the most of every opportunity life offered. Even at the end of her life, she enjoyed music, ice cream, and holding hands with loved ones, and she was known on occasion to break into tap dance.
The family wishes to send special thanks to the staff at Goddard House and Pat Roche Hospice House/NVNA.org for their care and compassion and to the private caregivers, especially Leanne Kelly, who made her years of living with Alzheimer's joyful and meaningful in surprising ways.
