Maria (Slowinska) Makar

August 2, 1926 — May 24, 2024

Dorchester

Of Dorchester, died peacefully on May 24, 2024 at the age of 97 years.

Beloved wife of the late Michael Makar and adored mother of Danuta Wiktorowska and her husband Wincenty and Marcella Tanona and her husband Janusz.  Maria was the oldest and longest living sibling in her family. She was preceded in death by her loving older sister Hela, younger  brother Antoni and close family members in Poland.

She loved her grandchildren, and was the cherished Babcia of Andrea, Danielle, John, Paul and Mariola.  Her pride and joy were her great grandsons Matthew, Nicholas and Tristan.  She was the loving Aunt of Ella, Karol and Great Aunt of Kayla.

She was extremely loved by her extended family and friends here and in Poland.

Born in Zagorze, Poland, to Antoni and Weronika (Pelka) on August 2, 1926.

During the war in 1940 at the age of 14 years she was taken from her home and family to Germany for forced labor.  She remained in Germany until April 30, 1956 when she immigrated with her daughters to the United States and settled in the West End of Boston.  Eventually moving to South Boston and Dorchester.

Our mother had a wonderful sense of humor and was a fabulous cook.   She loved watching her favorite team the Red Sox, playing Bingo, singing, listening to music and dancing.

Since our mother fell and injured herself during Covid, she resided the past four years at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Roslindale. We are so grateful and thankful to the doctors, nurses and staff that showed her so much love, compassion and tremendous care.

She brought much joy and laughter to the staff and the other residents. They will miss her dearly.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate Maria’s life by gathering for a memorial service on Wednesday, May 29th at 11:00 am. at the Gilman Chapel at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 920 Adams Street, Dorchester. Burial will follow the service.

In Maria’s memory or in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center, 1200 Center Street, Roslindale, or to your favorite charity.

Immediately following Maria's burial, her family would like to invite everyone to join them for a luncheon at Venezia Restaurant, 20 Ericsson Street, Dorchester, at 12:30 P.M.
