Marie E. (Johnson) Schallmo

April 13, 1937 — July 3, 2025

Dorchester, MA

Marie E. (Johnson) Schallmo passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on April 13, 1937, in Dorchester, she was the beloved daughter of the late Marie (Holman) and John Johnson.

Marie was predeceased by her devoted husband, Nelson “Chief” Schallmo; her son, Kevin Caeran; her brothers, John, Robert, and Thomas; and her dearest lifelong friend, Mary Durfee.

She was a cherished sister to Ruth O’Rourke and her late husband Frank of Delaware; James Johnson and his wife Donna of Norton; and Diane Vaicious and her husband Anthony of Georgia. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters-in-law, Joan and Peggy Johnson of Florida.

Marie leaves behind six beloved children: Paul and Patricia Caeran of Rockland; Deborah and Michael Barbuto of Braintree; James and Beth Caeran of New York; Candy and Paul Souza of Braintree; Linda and Gerald Sullivan of Braintree; and Kelley and James Becker of Littleton. She was the proud and adored “Nana” of 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Marie lived a vibrant, joy-filled life and found happiness in every celebration and holiday. Her love of decorating and wearing themed outfits made every occasion special. During her 18+ years at Keystone, she was known for her elaborate hallway displays and her flair for fashion, spreading joy throughout her community

Her generous spirit shone through in her cooking. She loved preparing meals for friends and neighbors, and her handmade ceramic creations became treasured gifts to many. Her grandchildren will always remember the adventures they shared with “Nana”: bus and train rides into Boston to Frog Pond, riding the Swan Boats, movie outings (with Nana sneaking in a quick nap), and ending the day with Happy Meals. Summer days at the beach in South Boston were legendary.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Marie’s life on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester. Burial will be private.
