Mr. Martin F. 'Matty' Walsh of Dorchester, native of Callowfeenish, Carna, Co. Galway, Ireland died at home with family by his side on Monday, June 24, 2019. He was 84.
Martin, affectionately known as 'Matty' was born February 25, 1935 one of thirteen children of the late Martin and Winifred (Curran) Walsh. Raised and educated in Ireland he emigrated to the United States in 1958 settling in Dorchester. He married Co. Sligo native Margaret 'Mary' McCarrick on Jan 25, 1966 in Blessed Sacrament Church in Riverstown, Co. Sligo, Ireland.
He worked with the Local #223 Construction Workers Union with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for 33 years, retiring in 2000.
Matty was treated like a king as he lived in his Savin Hill home with wonderful Irish women. His wife, four daughters and four granddaughters all adored him. He was an avid reader with a keen interest in history. He faithfully followed his native Galway hurling team and the Boston Red Sox. He loved Irish music and the Irish hour on the weekends.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Margaret 'Mary' (McCarrick) Walsh he leaves their daughters Una Connolly (Michael) of Effort, PA, Margaret M. 'Peggy' Carroll (Christopher), Barbara A. Walsh and Kathleen T. Walsh, all of Dorchester; his granddaughters Kristina, Kathleen and Ciara Carroll and Erin Connolly; his siblings Sr. Mary Walsh of San Antonio, TX, Bridget Christopher of Braintree, Sally Noding of England, and the late Joseph, Thomas, Patrick and John Walsh, Kate Cotter, Barbara Carroll, Ann Davis and Peggy King; also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Matty's life by gathering for calling hours in Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER, on Thursday, June 27th from 4-8 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Margaret Church of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish on Friday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.
