Mr. Michael Harrison Coughlin, of Dorchester, formerly of East Boston died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 4, 2020. He was 85.
Michael was born on December 6, 1934 in East Boston the oldest son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Gilbride) Coughlin. A graduate of East Boston High School, he met Savin Hill native Ellen A. Donohue and they were later married in Saint Williams Church in June of 1962. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Northeastern University. Mike honorably served his country in the Korean War with the United States Army.
For over 25 years he worked as a Revenue Officer for the Internal Revenue Service before retiring in 1990. In earlier years he worked as an Electrical Eengineer in the Navy Yard (Charlestown/Quincy) and for General Electric in Lynn as a Draftsman.
Family was always the center of his world and he was always willing to lend a hand to family, friend or stranger. He had a keen interest in poetry and art and was a phenomenal story teller. He was a member and former adjunct of the James J. Rice Post in Dorchester and the National Treasury Employee's Union (NTEU).
In addition to his wife, Ellen who died October 29, 2002 he is predeceased by his granddaughter, Dania Qudah and siblings: Judy Morgan, Jerry Coughlin, Katy Coughlin and Martin Coughlin.
He was the devoted father of Elizabeth Qudah and her husband, Abdalla of Dorchester, Joan O'Brien and her husband, Bill of Milton and John Coughlin and his wife, Shelley of Salem, NH. Cherished grandfather of Shadi Qudah, Rowan and her husband, Ali Raza, Sara and her husband, Abdallah Al Qudah, and Hamza Qudah all of Dorchester; Siobhan, Caitlin and Anya O'Brien, of Milton; Lily and Jake Coughlin of Salem, NH; Adored great-grandfather of Noura, Adam and Bilal. Brother of James Coughlin of FL, Mary Beth Johnston, Lawrence Coughlin and his wife Lorraine, all of East Boston; brother-in-law of Janet Coughlin of Quincy; also survived by many nieces & nephews; dear friend of Richard Murphy of South Boston.
Family and friends will honor and remember Michael's life by gathering for visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER, on Sunday, March 8th from 4-8 P.M. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Saint Mary of the Hills Church, 20 St. Mary's Road, MILTON, on Monday morning, March 9th at 11:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.
