Michael James Mahoney

MAHONEY, Michael James. Age 73, passed away on June 24, 2026, in Boston.

He was born on December 20, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, to his beloved parents Emma and Patrick Mahoney, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son, Conall; his stepson, Owen; his sister, Kathi; his brother-in-law, Randy; and his nieces and nephews.

A true jack of all trades, Michael lived a life defined by curiosity, creativity, and hard work. Over the years, he worked in traveling carnivals, in automobile assembly plants, was accomplished in furniture restoration, moderated online guitar forums, and enjoyed living simply. He embraced every experience and always had the best stories of the people and animals he met along the way.

Michael's greatest passion was guitars. He found joy in building, restoring, collecting, and appreciating the craftsmanship in their design and the music they made.

Michael was an avid reader. Among his favorite books was Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park, and he especially enjoyed seeing the story brought to life on film, watching the many iterations often with his friends and family.

An animal lover throughout his life, Michael held a special place in his heart for his revered German Shepherd, Sally, with whom his ashes will be spread. He also leaves behind three treasured cats—Su'Yen, Wren, and Crow—who were constant companions and brought him comfort and happiness.

Several years ago, when asked about the coolest thing he had ever done, Michael pointed at his son Conall without a moment's hesitation. Michael was thrilled to be his father, proud of the man his son has become, and grateful to move to Boston to finish his life with him.

Michael will be remembered for his independent spirit, his love of animals and music, and the unique way he approached life. He was a wonderful father, brother, and friend and will be deeply missed.

A  gathering to celebrate Michael's life will be held in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Avenue, DORCHESTER, on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at a time to be announced.
