Milton

Stephen Francis Mulcahy

Of Milton, Massachusetts, entered into eternal rest on May 29th, 2024, after a long illness.

Born on January 5th, 1947 to Francis Mulcahy and Virginia (Hardiman) Mulcahy in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the second of five children. He grew up in the Savin Hill neighborhood of Dorchester where he attended St. William Grammar School. He graduated from South Boston High School in 1965 and later earned both his Bachelor of Arts and J.D. of Law at Suffolk University in Boston. He was a reservist in the U.S. Army. He was an attorney for over 47 years at the Boston Juvenile Court where he was a tireless advocate for the youth of the city.

Stephen married Alice Tuffo Mulcahy in December of 1969. Together they raised six children, eventually settling in Milton. His family will always remember and be grateful for the years of his devotion, support, and love.  They will always remember his wit and sense of humor. They will never forget those moments when his Irish eyes started smiling, the laugh spilling out before the punchline, when he had the whole room in the palm of his hand.  He will always be remembered singing out and humming his favorite tunes, and for his cutting-edge and world-renowned gardening designs. His ability to locate and purchase items at a deep discount to their original retail value was unrivaled.

A faithful member of his church and a dedicated supporter of numerous charities, he never forgot his humble roots. He took the poverty and adversity of his childhood with him, and always sought to uplift and protect not only his family, his friends, and co-workers, but also whoever he encountered who was in need. Shrewd, and observant, he had a gift for getting to the heart of the matter. A complex man, he could simultaneously be down to earth and a deep thinker, light hearted or serious, easygoing or stubborn… but at all times he demonstrated compassion, wisdom, and understanding. He was always great at handling a crisis, and those who knew him knew that the trust one could place in him was absolute. A man who loved basketball, professional wrestling, reading, long walks, gardening, dogs, and above all, his ten grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife Alice, his children Stephen Jr. and fiancé Tami Forbes of Dartmouth, Christopher and his wife Megan of Scituate, Mark and his wife Kelli of Franklin, Laura Frey and her husband JR of Plymouth, Debra of Brooklyn, NY, and Peter and his wife Amanda of Lynn. He will forever be loved and remembered as “Goo-Goo” by his Grandchildren: Jeffrey, Elliana, Christopher, Quinn, Charlotte, Vivienne, Shane, Abigail, Charlie, and Dylan.  He is also survived by his four loving siblings, Kevin Mulcahy of Quincy, Phillip Mulcahy of Milton, Ann Marie McIntyre of Milton, and Ellen Porter of Melrose. He will also forever be remembered by his many nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Family and friends will honor and remember Stephen’s life by gathering for a Funeral Mass in St. Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton, on Tuesday morning, June 4, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. Interment will be private and there will be no visiting hours.
