MALEK, Veronika Lillian "Lola".
Veronika was born December 20, 1949 in Gary, Indiana to Veronica Zielonka Malek and Jan Malek, Polish immigrants. Her mother took care of the home in New Chicago, Indiana, while her father worked at Bethlehem Steel. She graduated from Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Grade School, River Forest High School, Indiana University, where she earned a B.A. degree in 1972, and Purdue University, where she earned an M.A. degree in 1984. She was an exchange student at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, through the Kosciuszko Foundation.
She was a professional interpreter for the State and Federal court system in the Polish and Russian language and a member of MACI (Massachusetts Association of Court Interpreters).
She lived in Dorchester, MA where she raised one son, Raphael Jano Malek. She loved to travel and had recently vacationed in Iceland and Paris in 2018, with her sister, Suzanne.
She died on Friday, May 15, 2020, from complications due to Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer.
Veronika had two sisters, Suzanne Janette Malek, who resides in Oregon, and Diane Malek, who resides in California. She had two nephews, Suzanne's sons, James Malek Rapp and Stephen Malek Rapp of Oregon, and one niece, Diane's daughter, Kathryn Beryl Malek Hood, who resides in New Jersey.
Donations may be made in Lola's honor to the Pancreatic Cancer (PANCAN) Action Network (www.pancan.org) in lieu of flowers.
A private celebration of her life is planned for a future date.
